OfficeSuite Pro 5 is a pretty big value for Amazon to just be giving over for free; it normally costs $14.99. The app allows you to create, view, and edit Microsoft Word documents and Excel spreadsheets. It also allows you to view PowerPoint and PDF files. All in all, it’s a great package and extends the functionality of your Android tablet or smartphone immensely.
Amazon has had their app store available and giving away free apps since March of this year. Not every app is exciting or that highly reviewed but every once in a while there is a diamond in the rough. Angry Birds Rio (ad-free), Plants vs Zombies, and now OfficeSuite Pro 5 are just some of the real winners that have been offered. Everything in between, you can’t really complain about because they’re free. With such a big package being given away today, you might have to wonder: Is there a catch?
You might see it in the reviews or you might encounter it when you try to get the free app today. If you don’t have a credit card on file with your 1-click settings, you won’t be able to get this app. Even though the app is free, Amazon is requiring that your 1-click settings have a shipping address and credit card on file. Assumedly, this makes it more convenient for you to purchase other apps through their Android App Store and that might increase the amount of inventory they’re moving and profiting from. If this is the thinly veiled strategy behind it, Amazon is using a big carrot – the $15 value OfficeSuite Pro 5 – to get customers to where they want them. Don’t worry. The free app is free and you’re not charged for it.
Then again, perhaps it’s just coincidence that this app is available today for free and at the same time Amazon implemented a policy that required the 1-click settings to be completed before purchases could be made. After all, Amazon is the second most trusted company, according to a recent study.
Unfortunately, if the OfficeSuite Pro 5 developer, Mobile Systems, did make this deal with Amazon to add incentive to adding 1-click payment info, they are suffering some of the consequences. There are many 1-star reviews already on the app because of the “Payment required?” change. First of all, that’s an Amazon level change and adding that to the app’s reviews is useless and falsifies the true rating of the app. Those questioning the extensive permissions that the app asks for might be a little more justified.
Amazon’s PR did not respond to a request for comment by time of publication.
If you don’t mind adding your credit card to your 1-click settings with Amazon, you can get OfficeSuite Pro 5 for free within the next 14 hours.
