On Friday, the stock charger that came with my Nexus 6P phone stopped charging my phone. Every second it would blink the charge light but it would not sustain a charge. I tried other outlets and swapping cables but it seemed to have bitten the dust for good. Just as I was getting tons of micro USB AC adapters, they switched standards on me. The Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X use USB Type-C connectors. I was able to charge my phone from my wife’s Nexus 5X stock charger but it was a slow charge and would not switch to “charging rapidly” in order to reduce the time it takes to charge the phone.
Searching for a replacement, I found a few options on Amazon.com. I decided to go with the Anker USB Type-C AC adapter with Quick Charge 3.0. I chose this charger because Anker was a recognizable brand and I didn’t want to fry my phone with a cheap charger. It has good features to charge the phone quickly but also protect it from surges. Some reviews also confirmed that it reached ‘charging rapidly’ on the Nexus 6P. I can now confirm this as well.
Unlike most of the chargers that I saw on Amazon, this one included the USB Type-C cable. It was helpful to have a spare USB Type-C cable to test which component was bad with the stock charger. As the new standard is still becoming prevalent, the 3 foot cable is a welcome addition.
The charger is packaged nicely in a simple 5″ x 4.5″ box. Inside the box, the charger is securely packaged along with a Welcome Guide and a customer service/review booklet. The cable was subtly packaged in the cardboard material holding the charger in place.
The Anker charger is a little taller than the stock charger but makes up for the extra space with its foldable outlet prongs. This is a nice feature for traveling and reducing the sharp points that you are bringing with you. The cable is detachable so that it can be used for other purposes and also travel quite compact.
Upon charging my phone for the first time, it took the Nexus 6P from 54% to 87% in less than 20 minutes. You can see from the battery charge below that the little bit of charging brought it up quite significantly.
At first, the phone did not state that it was charging rapidly though the rate seemed to match what I was used to with the stock charger. Without monitoring it continuously, I checked the phone a little later and noticed that the ‘Charging rapidly’ had appeared and showed up almost immediately the next time I plugged the phone into the charger.
If you need a spare or replace USB Type-C charger, I can recommend the Anker USB Type-C charger.
