The free certificate authority sponsored by EFF, Mozilla, and others are continuing to make progress. I first shared about the group Let’s Encrypt in November of last year:
Through the Internet Security Research Group, Mozilla Corporation, Cisco Systems, Inc., Akamai Technologies, Electronic Frontier Foundation, IdenTrust, Inc., and University of Michigan researchers are looking to create a new free certificate authority. This CA has the goal of allowing TLS-protected communication, the successor to SSL, a certificate to be installed on a server in a one-click process.
Yesterday, the organization posted their first certificate. It requires pre-installing their root certificate so the test site is seen as valid but it is making progress. This milestone is a week behind the updated schedule that they shared in early August. That schedule also planned for general availability on the week of November 16th.
