This Tuesday marks the last updates for Windows Vista

Hopefully this message is not of importance to many of you. Fully patched Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 will receive its last updates this Tuesday as the Extended Support for the generally disliked operating system ends on 4/11/2017.

From the Product lifecycle website, we can see Vista with Service Pack 2 left mainstream support on April 10th, 2012 and five years later will exit extended support. Extended support mainly provides just security updates, so losing those updates will leave the operating system with any known vulnerabilities disclosed or unpatched after Tuesday.

Another source of information for your planning is the Windows lifecycle fact sheet site. The last Microsoft operating system for desktops to drop out of support was Windows XP in April 2014 while Server 2003 dropped out of support in July 2015. Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 will leave Extended support in January 2020.

If you or your organization are still running Windows Vista on any computers, it will be prudent to migrate to a supported operating system as soon as possible.
