Malwarebytes announced today that they have acquired AdwCleaner, the popular utility used to clean up adware, toolbars, and other potentially unwanted programs. Version 6 of the program was released this year. It receives more than 200,000 downloads a day and has been installed over 200 million times.
AdwCleaner started in 2011 as the product of three French students. Two of the founders continued their work on the program and will now join Malwarebytes in engineering and research roles. Malwarebytes will integrate the proprietary techniques and detections into Malwarebytes Antimalware but for the near-term AdwCleaner will continue to be available with the addition of Malwarebytes branding.
