WSUS 3.0 SP2 end-of-life extended to match Server 2008 R2

Microsoft has announced an update to the lifecycle of Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Service Pack 2. The utility for managing Windows Updates in a corporate environment will have its extended support end date pushed back to January 14th, 2020. You can confirm this information on the Microsoft Product Lifecycle page for the WSUS 3.0 product. This new timeline matches the Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 extended support end date.

In Server 2012 and newer, WSUS is a server role that can optionally be installed to provide the service. This new version has support until January 2023. The main difference is actually Windows 10 support. WSUS 4.0 is able to deploy Windows 10 Feature Updates. It also has PowerShell cmdlets for automation.

With Server 2016 being released later this month with Microsoft Ignite, perhaps you prefer to wait until getting your hands on the latest version before migrating your organization to a newer version of WSUS. Microsoft has a TechNet article to assist with ‘migrating to WSUS 4.0 by 2020‘.
