YouTube Red launches, promises Creators same or increased revenue

As promised, YouTube has launched their new subscription service, YouTube Red. The membership costs $9.99 per month and allows additional functionality across devices with no ads such as the ability to save videos offline and keep your videos playing in the background. You can find all the details and start a free 1 month trial at youtube.com/red in the U.S.

YouTube Red is also intertwined with Google Play Music. If you subscribe to one, you’ll also get the other automatically.

Subscribing to end video ads might be enticing to YouTube viewers but the service change has caused some concern for content creators on the streaming platform. YouTube seeks to address those concerns and reassure creators that the majority of revenue is going to the content creators. In a special post to the YouTube Creator Blog, YouTube posted Seven things to know about our new subscription service. The list provides a good summary of how the new service works. One of the seven points (#3) addresses revenue specifically and promises creators will make as much or more revenue with YouTube Red. In a separate point, (#4) Google is even footing the bill for the free trials and creators will still make as much or more than without YouTube Red.
