Amazon’s free Android app of the day page, which I visit daily, was oddly generic this morning. After posting free apps for the past couple years, though there were some repeats, it was odd for Amazon to miss a day.
It turned out that the company had much, much more up their sleeves. With what they’re coining ActuallyFree, Amazon is able to make more paid apps free through an Amazon Underground app. Instead of charging, they are picking up the tab and will pay the developers based on the amount of time the apps are used.
You can get the Amazon Underground app for your Android device by visiting Amazon.com/underground. There you will find the download to install the app. You could also have the link texted or emailed to you from the Underground introduction page. You will have to modify your Android security if you have not already done so in order to allow apps to be installed from “unknown sources”.
Fire Tablets are a little different and can find Amazon Underground from the menu in the built-in Store app.
With Amazon Underground, Amazon is able to offer “over $10,000 in apps, games and in-app items that are actually free.” You just have to allow the collection of app usage data so that Amazon knows how to pay the developers behind your favorite apps like Frozen Free Fall, Star Wars Rebels: Recon Missions, OfficeSuite Professional 8, Goat Simulator, Angry Birds Slingshot Stella, Duck Tales Remastered, Magicka, and more.
