Codecademy has a new course to teach the command line. The free online learning session is for unix-based systems such as Linux and Mac OS X, but the concepts carry over to Windows as well. It is written for the beginner level and is estimated to take only an hour to complete.
The course is broken down into four sections:
- Get up and running with the command line by navigating directories and files.
- Learn how to copy, move, and delete files and directories from the command line
- Learn to redirect input and output to and from files and programs.
- Learn to configure the environment using the command line.
Codecademy provides its own terminal emulator on the right side of the window with instructions on the left. With the built-in terminal, you are able to follow right along and zip through the lesson in a worry-free environment.
The course is intentionally basic and might do really well for someone on the edge of embracing more technical uses for their computer but doesn’t know where to start or is intimidated by Terminal. It teaches the basic commands including ls, cd, pwd, mkdir, cp, mv, grep, and more.
