Ditching Flash? Test your internet connection with HTML5 speedtests

Adobe’s Flash has been on the blacklist recently (or even longer) with security concerns. Many things that used to be Flash’s bread-and-butter like streaming video and games are moving to HTML5.

One other Flash staple has been the Internet speed test. The most common tests use Flash to tell you how fast the upload and download speeds of your connection are. This might help you spot a problem or ensure you are getting what you pay for from your ISP. Speed tests also help the FCC gauge America’s Internet connectivity capabilities and costs.

Not surprisingly, the Internet Speed Test is also making the move to HTML 5. In fact, you even have a few options to choose from:

The tests are pretty simple and straightforward and give you the results afterwards. There was certainly some discrepancy between what the different tests reported but it is going to be impacted with different configurations of the tests such as file size and distance to the server.

I found Open Speed Test, SpeedOf.Me, and DSLReports speed tests to work the best for me. My DSLReports results are captured in the image below:

DSLReports even gives you an easy URL and badge to share your results:
