Intel’s new X99 chipset brings new CPUs, motherboards, and DDR4 RAM

Last week Intel unveiled 3 new CPUs in the Haswell-E line and with it comes a new socket and the x99 chipset. For enthusiasts and early adopters this is an exciting announcement because it brings a new generation of technology in one announcement. The three processors that were announced include the Core i7-5820K, Corei7-5930K, and Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition. The 5820K and 5930K are 6-core CPUs while the 5960X has 8 cores and a larger L3 cache. These processors utilize the LGA2011-v3 socket.

CPUs

The CPUs pair with new motherboards to unlock the features of the X99 chipset. This includes compatibility with quad-channel DDR4 RAM up to 2133 MHz, overclocking features, updates to the Intel Rapid Storage Technology, more USB 3.0 ports, USB port and SATA port disable capabilities, and more versatile PCI Express configurations.

The combination of the new Intel Core i7 processor on the LGA2011-v3 socket and the Intel X99 Chipset is the first-ever 8-core desktop processor platform, delivering up to 45 percent more multi-threaded performance over the latest Intel® four-core platform. DDR4 RAM

DDR4 RAM as 288-pin modules at 2133MHz will support up to 64GB, offer higher density of modules, and more bandwidth for less voltage. The usual manufacturers are expected to have DDR4 RAM arriving  this month, with some already available. Given how early it is in life, these new sticks of RAM will take some time to come down to the prices we are used to with DDR3 RAM.

Motherboards

With Intel’s launch of the CPU and X99 chipset, many manufacturers were at the ready with product refreshes to bring compatibility and take advantage of the new features. Most companies have released entire series refreshes, not just single products, so be sure to compare offerings to make sure you get exactly what you want at a price you’re willing to pay.
