The goTenna pairs with your phone using Bluetooth-LE and then allows you to communicate with other GoTenna users over 3 miles away. That range will increase with height but decreases with environmental obstructions. At first thought, you might say I can communicate around the world, why would I need goTenna? The beauty of goTenna is that it doesn’t rely on your cell phone provider’s network.
Away from a cell tower? Too many people or obstructions around you to get a stable cell signal? You would still be able to send a message or a location to a goTenna user within range using their app.
Since the goTenna messages are sent directly between devices, they’re off the grid and free. Your encrypted messages also go only to the person you intend unless you want to send a broadcast message to all goTennas within range.
The goTenna is compatible with iOS and Android. It runs off of a rechargeable battery with a micro USB connector. It’s also water-resistant for when you are hiking off the beaten path. You can learn more about it at the goTenna How it works page or FAQs.
