Are You Sony PS3 Owners Ready For Some Football? Stream NFL Sunday Ticket This Season!

Live sports are a commonly cited reason that customers still subscribe to cable TV. The option to cut the cord may have just gotten a little closer with today’s announcement on the PlayStation Blog – DirecTV and PlayStation Bring NFL Sunday Ticket to PS3. The ink must have just dried on this agreement because I can’t find anything on DirecTV’s site about it.

Ok, this sounds cool. How much is it going to cost me?

At the start of the season, viewers who do not currently have access to DIRECTV will be able to subscribe to NFL SUNDAY TICKET at the season price of $339.95. Existing DIRECTV customers can access the service on their PS3 for an additional $50 and use the PS3 as an additional receiver for your home.

This is comparable to the price DirecTV customers pay of $66.99/month for 5 months or $334.95/month for 1 month. Wait. What? Let me check my math real quick… $66.99 * 5 = $334.95. Huh… So who would get 1 month of NFL Sunday Ticket for the exact same price you could get 5 months?

The only exception to this is that DirecTV is including NFL Sunday Ticket at no cost on all of its plans except the lowest. You might be better off trading in your current provider for DirecTV’s Choice Xtra package at $34.99/month (with 2 year agreement and rebate).

So $340 is a little expensive. Most cordcutters are probably without cable to save some money after all. What do I get for this much scratch?

NFL SUNDAY TICKET is a DIRECTV-exclusive sports package that offers:

  • Up to 14 NFL games every Sunday
  • Full HD for every football game
  • DIRECTV’s Red Zone Channel

A little bit closer to the start of the season (22 days away according to DirecTV’s countdown marquee), you’ll be able to sign up for NFL Sunday Ticket through the PlayStation 3 which joins MLB.TV and NHL GameCenter. More details are promised on the PlayStation blog shortly including sign up info and a video tutorial.
