Wal-Mart acquired VUDU a year and a half ago and is now putting the video streaming service to work directly from Walmart.com. A banner on the left side of the home page directs you to the digital rental or purchase storefront. Walmart.com/vudu will also take you to the correct page where you can browse the movies available for streaming or find devices able to stream like Windows PCs, Macs, the Sony PS3, and certain TVs and Blu-Ray players.
Movies are available at Walmart.com to rent for $1-$5.99 or for purchase from $4.99 and up. Wal-Mart is also introducing a 99 cent movie of the day.
With Wal-Mart integrating VUDU into Walmart.com, it is increasing the competition with Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and others. The market is getting crowded but there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot to differentiate the services. Customers may have more options but it seems the MPAA is probably the only winner as licensing costs increase.
