In the increasingly complicated battle against malware, it’s helpful to have access to as many useful tools as you can get your hands on. That’s why I’d recommend adding the free Sophos Anti-Rootkit tool to your toolkit. In addition to MalwareBytes and the recently mentioned TDSSKiller, running a scan with this utility is just another test to run to make sure you don’t have something lurking in the background.
It takes longer to run than TDSSKiller because it scans all files but it might find the source of the malware since rootkits are designed to mask themselves from the operating system.
I recently encountered a malware-infected computer where the virus definitions had been corrupted so that the antivirus wouldn’t run. Coming in with these tools, I was able to clean the machine up and have it rebuild its definitions so active protection was enabled again.
Do you have any other malware cleanup tools you swear by?
