I woke up this morning to find a very ugly iGoogle homepage. It appears a part of the Google infrastructure is down and it seems to be the gmodules.com area. This will cause iGoogle to not fully load all the way and other Google gadgets on websites will hang and take a while to time out before allowing the rest of the page to load.
Some lines at the top state:
‘Home’ tab has been sent. Sending failed. Please try again in a few minutes. The ‘GADGET_NAME’ gadget has been sent.
Google’s App Status currently says that there are no problems but iGoogle is now touting a mangled face only a mother could love. I tested the generic iGoogle page in Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer: all 3 had the same problem. I tried it from my work computer which was able to connect, but now I’ve seen other reports of people having problems with YouTube, so I have a feeling I’m not the only one.
The HTTP headers look a little abnormal:
Hopefully this will be resolved soon and I’ll try to update the post should I hear more.
Update: I haven’t really been able to find any additional information about this problem. A little more information about my setup: I’m connected to the Internet via AT&T U-Verse and use OpenDNS. I switched my DNS server to AT&T’s provided one in trying to troubleshoot the issue but it still persisted.
There was news posted to Ars Technica and Cnet yesterday about a DNS mix-up with select web traffic getting redirected into China. Just speculation, but I wonder if it’s related?
