Despite my attempts to educate here at 404TS, I still continue to receive screenshots and images inside of .doc files. Other times, you might have to revise a document or convert a Word document to a wiki or webpage. In any case where you need to extract the images from a Word document, hopefully the following three methods will help.
Here’s an example of an image saved in a Word document:
Method #1
The best way to obtain the image is to save the Word document as a web page. This method will give you the image in its original size and format and the thumbnail in jpg format. Go to the Office Button, Save As, and Other Formats.
Then in the Save as dialog window, choose ‘Web Page (*.htm;*.html)’ from the drop-down, select where to save it, and enter a name for the file.
After saving as a web page, you can go to the location where you saved it and you’ll see a .htm file and a directory. Inside the directory, you’ll find a few files and the images. In this case, the original image is saved as image001.png because that was the original format. There is also image002.jpg which is the thumbnail you actually see in the image. You can copy either image from this location to where ever you would like it, but I would recommend using the original image for highest quality.
This method is nice because it gives you all the images from the document in one fell swoop.
Method #2
The second best method is to copy the images from Word into PowerPoint. This method will give you the image in its original size and format.
Right-click on the image in the Word Document and choose ‘Copy’ from the context menu. Then in a blank PowerPoint presentation, right-click on a slide and choose ‘Paste’. The image should now appear on the slide.
Next, right-click on the image in PowerPoint and go to Save as Picture…
This will open a save dialog and you can save the image where you’d like it and in most common formats.
Method #3
The third method works for images that are not scaled down inside the Word document, but it will work for any image. This method will give you the thumbnail is whatever format you save it as.
Right-click on the image in Word and choose Copy.
Open your photo editor (Paint.NET, if you’re looking for recommendations) and paste the copied image into a new image.
