Unlocker – Trace ‘in use’ files to the process

If upon trying to delete, move, or open a file you get an error message about it being in use, you can try to close programs and kill processes that you think are using the file.

“Cannot delete file: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.”

You can use Process Explorer to track down the process, but an even easier method involves the freeware application, Unlocker. Simply install the Unlocker utility. Then right-click on the file you’re trying to interact with.

Unlocker on the Context-menu

You’ll see the Unlocker listed in the context menu with a little magic-wand icon. Just click on this to get a dialog of options. If the file is actually locked, you’ll get a dialog like this:

Using Unlocker, you likely won’t have to kill the process, just click an ‘Unlock’ button. Killing the Process is an option if you wish to go that route though. If you’re still having problems interacting with the file (renaming, moving, or deleting it) select what you want to do from the drop-down on that same screen as above. That will prompt you for more info if needed (where you want it moved or what you want it renamed to). If Unlocker can’t do it now, it will take care of it after the next reboot when the file should be free.

Download Unlocker. There are plenty of similar tools out there, but going by the comparison matrix on the Unlocker home page it’s the most full-featured. It’s also free.
