Disk Defragmenter and Disk Clean-up are typically installed by default on Windows XP installations. If, however, they are not showing up under Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and when you go to My Computer, right-click on the drive, Properties, and on the Tools tab you get the message:
“No defragmentation tool is currently installed”
You might need to manually install Disk Defragmenter. You should still be able to get to the Disk Clean-up by going to My Computer, right-click on the drive, Properties. On the General tab, (near the pie chart) there should be a button for “Disk Clean-up”. Just create a shortcut under C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersStart MenuProgramsAccessoriesSystem Tools to C:windowssystem32cleanmgr.exe and call it Disk Clean-up.
To install Disk Defragmenter, simply open My Computer and browse to C:Windowsinf.
You may need to turn on hidden folders and file extensions to find this folder and the files.
In the C:Windowsinf directory browse to find the dfrg.inf file. Simply right-click and select install. (Right-click C:Windowsinfdfrg.inf and choose Install.)
The install happens very quickly, so you might not see anything but a flash on the screen. Go to the Start Menu, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and see that Disk Defragmenter is now there.
