This error message would pop up any time a user was browsing with IE or going through My Computer at random folders it would pop up. Clicking cancel proceeds with your request. Clicking Ok launches a web browser that begins downloading ieantivirus.exe.
None of the antivirus programs that I tried picked up on this at all (Avast, Mcaffe, Spybot, Ad-Aware, Kaspersky Online scanner, Windows Live OneCare.)
I found plenty of matching descriptions online, but none of them pointed to the registry keys, program location, or source of the problem this user was encountering.
Finally tried the SmitFraudFix and that took care of the problem.
Download the SmitFraudFix files here.
Extract them to an easy location and reboot into Safe Mode (Press F8 before the Windows splash screen until you see the Boot menu. Choose “Start Windows in Safe Mode”.)
Run the SmitfraudFix.cmd from the extracted folder. (It’s a cmd file, so you can open it up in Notepad and take a look at all it does.) It passed a virus scan and fixed the problem on this problematic laptop.
Best o’ luck.
